Livestock Undersecretary to “Sudanhorizon”: We Fear Currency Float Could Reduce Exports

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries, Dr. Ammar Al-Sheikh, expressed concern that floating the Sudanese pound could increase the cost of live livestock destined for export, raising their prices and ultimately undermining their competitiveness in international markets.

In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon, the undersecretary said that live livestock exports have exceeded three million head from January 2026 to date, generating $82,474,900 in revenue.

He added that achieving the same results during the remainder of the year may prove difficult, noting that a currency float would increase the cost of feed, transportation, and other inputs required to prepare livestock for export.

The undersecretary expressed hope that the exchange rate of the Sudanese pound against the U.S. dollar would stabilize, which would help stabilize export prices overall and contribute to economic recovery.
