Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency, on Monday announced that the number of people who have returned to their homes in Sudan has risen to more than 3.5 million. It said that these individuals have returned to nine of the country’s 18 states after being displaced and forced to seek refuge both within and outside the country.
In a statement, the IOM said that 2,915,306 individuals have returned home from internal displacement, while 585,176 have returned from abroad.
The organization indicated that these individuals have returned to 2,575 locations in 65 localities across nine states. Ninety-seven percent of them have settled in their original areas, while the remainder have returned to nearby locations.
The IOM noted that Khartoum State witnessed the highest return movement, with 1,363,071 individuals returning out of a total of 3,770,161 who fled their homes since the outbreak of the conflict 33 months ago.
The report stated that the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) decreased to 9,139,309 individuals residing in 11,356 locations across all 185 localities in the country, with Darfur states hosting 62% of the total IDP population.
It further explained that the number of IDPs dropped in nine states, with the highest rates of decrease observed in North Darfur and South Kordofan, due to IDPs relocating to neighboring states or returning to their homes.
