Humanitarian Volunteer Died in RSF Detention Center in El Fasher

The Sudan Doctors Network has announced the death of Sudanese humanitarian volunteer Al-Tayeb Al-Tom Mursal while in the custody of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) at Shalla Prison in El Fasher, North Darfur—town the RSF seized in October 2023.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Network reported that Mursal died in RSF custody at Shalla Prison following his arrest during the RSF’s incursion into the city.
He was among more than 3,000 detainees held in Shalla Prison, various other prisons, and private homes converted into detention centers; additionally, buildings at the University of El Fasher were repurposed as detention facilities. The humanitarian and health conditions of these detainees remain unknown as their captivity continues.
The statement emphasized that Mursal’s death is just one of many fatalities occurring within undeclared RSF detention centers. Communication between detainees and their families has been severed for nearly a year, as the RSF prohibits such contact.
The Network held the RSF fully responsible for the safety and lives of the detainees, citing the dire humanitarian and health conditions within the RSF prisons and detention centers.
These facilities are plagued by the spread of epidemics and diseases, as well as severe shortages of basic services, alongside reports of frequent detainee deaths resulting from neglect, mistreatment, and torture.
The Sudan Doctors Network called on the international community and human rights and humanitarian organizations to take urgent action to press for the disclosure of the fate of all detainees and ensure their safety; to grant humanitarian and medical organizations immediate access to detention sites to assess the detainees’ health and humanitarian conditions and provide them with medical care and basic necessities; and to secure the release of arbitrarily detained civilians and hold those responsible for any violations against detainees accountable.
