High-Level African Union Delegation to Visit Khartoum Soon
Sudanhorizon – Mariam Abshir – Exclusive
A high-level technical delegation from the African Union Commission is expected to visit Sudan in the coming days to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the situation of the African Union office in Sudan, in addition to holding important meetings with a number of state officials.
According to a senior diplomatic source who spoke to Sudanhorizon, the African Union has proposed April 5 as the date for the visit of a delegation headed by Mohamed Belaiche, Special Envoy to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Director of the African Union Coordination Office in Khartoum. The delegation will include a number of officials from various departments within the African Union.
The African Union had previously closed its office in Khartoum following the developments of October 25, 2021, after which it suspended Sudan’s membership, considering the events to constitute an unconstitutional change.
Sudan, however, views the step taken by the African Union as biased and an arbitrary interpretation of the Union’s principles, arguing that the change that occurred represented the dissolution of a partnership between two transitional parties rather than the overthrow of an elected government.
