Guterres: Deep Concern over Declaration of ‘Tasis’ Authority

New York – Sudanhorizon
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his “deep concern over the announcement on July 26 by the (Tasis) Alliance, which includes the Rapid Support Forces, affiliated civilian actors, and armed groups, of the establishment of a governing authority in areas under its control.
A statement issued Tuesday by the Secretary-General’s spokesperson explained that Guterres reiterates his deep concern that this step represents a further escalation of the conflict in Sudan, deepens the country’s fragmentation, and risks further entrenching the crisis.
He said this announcement does not bring Sudan closer to resolving the conflict, which can only be achieved through inclusive and meaningful dialogue and negotiations.
The statement added that the Secretary-General emphasizes that preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity remains key to a sustainable solution to the conflict.
The Secretary-General’’strongly condemns the ongoing violence’’ perpetrated against civilians across Sudan by both parties to the conflict, including horrific cases of conflict-related sexual violence and ethnic violence.
The statement concluded by saying that the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Ramtane Lamamra, seeks to engage the warring parties and all other stakeholders to achieve progress in cessation of hostilities, protection of civilians, access to humanitarian aid, and strengthening de-escalation
