The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has welcomed the statements attributed to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, following the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Canada, on the situation in Sudan.

Sudanese Foreign Minister and Minister of International Cooperation, Mohy El-Din Salem, told the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) on Thursday that calling things by their proper names, directly accusing the terrorist militia and the mercenaries it employs of committing massacres against innocent civilians, and the possibility of labelling the militia a terrorist organization, paves the way for correcting the international community’s view of what is happening in Sudan.

The minister was quoted by the agency as adding that this also distances people from equating the Sudanese national regular army with an outlawed tribal militia.

The minister added that the US Secretary of State’s statements, acknowledging the brutality of the terrorist militia’s practices and the need for confronting it and halting its arms supplies, send a strong message to other countries following the peace process in Sudan, as well as those aiding the militia by either supplying it with weapons or allowing it to use their territories and borders to smuggle weapons and mercenaries.

The Sudan News Agency (SUNA) quoted the minister as saying that the time has come to hold the Dagalo militia accountable. He pointed out that the international community’s delayed response to the Sudanese government’s repeated appeals to compel the militia to implement UN Security Council resolutions, such as Resolution 2736/2024, to allow aid into El Fasher, have led to the humanitarian catastrophe the world is witnessing in El Fasher.

In the same context, the minister called on the international community to pay attention to the fact that the militia is employing the same tactics and besieging the cities of Dilling, Kadugli, and Babanusa, a situation the international community must address to prevent a repeat of the El Fasher tragedy.

Regarding the number of citizens who managed to leave El Fasher,as commented on by Secretary Rubio, the Minister clarified that the Sudanese Armed Forces, along with joint forces and other supporting forces present in El Fasher, opened the way for these citizens to leave the city before tactically withdrawing to protect the lives and property of innocent civilians.

He added that the Sudanese military is exercising its constitutional right to protect the land, the people, and innocent civilians. He emphasized that the citizens’ support for the military and their flight from areas controlled by the terrorist militia is clear evidence of the popular support for the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the other supporting forces in this war of dignity.

The Minister reiterated his welcome of the US Secretary of State’s statements and expressed his hope that these statements would mark a genuine beginning for holding the terrorist militia accountable, and that all those who aided them, whether by supplying them with weapons, allowing the entry of weapons and mercenaries into their territories, or those who supported them politically and promoted them regionally and internationally, would be held accountable.

The Minister concluded his remarks by affirming that the Sudanese government is open to engaging with the international community to achieve security, peace, and stability, but in a manner consistent with the aspirations of the Sudanese people, who have the first and last word in the journey to achieving security and peace in the country.
