Energy Ministry Expects Merowe Dam Power Station Maintenance to Be Completed, Operations to Resume Sunday

The Ministry of Energy expects maintenance work at the Merowe Dam Power Station to be completed and the station to resume operations next Sunday, August 16, following the arrival of the required equipment and spare parts from China.
In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, the ministry said the initial restoration would begin with the Merowe–Al-Markhiyat transmission line, noting that confirmation of the timeline remains dependent on progress in the technical work and the successful completion of testing.
The ministry said engineering and technical teams are continuing repair work that began several days ago to address the major fault at the Merowe Dam Power Station. The repairs have included installation, connections, inspections, and testing.
The return of the Merowe–Al-Markhiyat line is particularly important, as it represents a key step toward restoring power supplies to Khartoum, River Nile, and Red Sea states. Intensive work is continuing to restore the remaining transmission lines in succession.
The ministry described reports claiming that maintenance has been completed and electricity has been fully restored as inaccurate at this stage. It explained that the nature of the work and the damage to the station’s cables require the highest levels of precision and testing, in addition to necessary safety procedures before final operation.
The ministry also confirmed that the Director General of Sudan Electricity Holding Company and the Director General of Thermal and Hydropower Generation are overseeing the maintenance work in the field.
Meanwhile, the electricity grid in other states has experienced some faults due to natural conditions, resulting in fluctuations in power supplies along some transmission lines. Work is underway to stabilize the situation.
The ministry expressed hope that electricity would be restored and stabilized across all affected areas.
