Egyptian Official Explains Why Egypt Rejects a Parallel Government in Sudan

The English-language newspaper Independent Egypt reported that Egypt’s Assistant Foreign Minister, Yasser Sorour, reaffirmed Cairo’s rejection of the establishment of a parallel government affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan.
According to the online publication, Sorour explained in an interview with Cairo News Channel last Saturday that the existence of a parallel government in Sudan would complicate the crisis and hinder any efforts to resolve it, emphasizing that Egypt has a clear and consistent vision regarding the ongoing Sudanese crisis.
Sorour stated that Egypt’s position stems from the need to preserve Sudan’s legitimate state institutions, referring specifically to the Sudanese Armed Forces. He stressed that the collapse of these institutions could lead to widespread chaos, which would not serve the interests of Egypt or the region.
He added that the rejection of parallel entities is not limited to Egypt alone but has also been affirmed by the African Peace and Security Council and reflected in statements issued by the UN Security Council, all underscoring the importance of respecting Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, and that any threat to this principle is completely unacceptable.
The Assistant Foreign Minister reiterated that Egypt remains committed to supporting Sudan’s legitimate institutions and continues to work toward facilitating political and negotiated solutions. He emphasized that any attempts to weaken the state or create parallel entities could undermine peace and stability efforts.
Sorour concluded by stressing the importance of adhering to a nationally led political path in Sudan to achieve lasting stability.
