Diplomatic Source: Intense Diplomatic Activities at UNSC on Suda

New York – Sudanhorizon – Mariam Abasher

A high-ranking diplomatic source stated that intense diplomatic activity is currently taking place within the corridors of the UN Security Council, led by Britain and Denmark, concerning the latest developments in Sudan and efforts to find a solution to the war that has been raging for over two and a half years.

The source, speaking to Sudanhorizon news website, added that the format of the upcoming session and the agenda to be discussed will become clear by the end of this week. However, leaks indicate that an informal, interactive dialogue about Sudan is currently taking place within the Security Council.

The source pointed out that the activity is being led by Britain, the penholder, and Denmark, and that they have prepared a memorandum to assess diplomatic initiatives and how to establish mechanisms to prevent duplication and fragmentation of mediation efforts.

The memorandum noted that despite the numerous initiatives, they have not been able to achieve a real breakthrough. The source anticipated that the upcoming session would include briefings from several key regional and international actors, most notably the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra; the Chairperson of the African Union High-Level Panel on Sudan, Mohamed Ibn Chambas; the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber; the Head of the Sudan and Horn of Africa Department at the League of Arab States; the IGAD representative to the UN; and a representative of the Quartet.
