Developments in Congo and Sudan on the Table of Discussion between the AU & the U.S.

The African Union announced that its Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, held fruitful talks on Tuesday with U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Ms. Allison Hooker, in the presence of Ambassador Vincent D. Spera, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, focused on ways to strengthen cooperation between the African Union and the United States.
Discussions highlighted U.S. support for health and humanitarian sectors, efforts to stabilize Somalia, the AU’s mediation role in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan, as well as the promotion of trade. According to an AU press release issued Wednesday, the Chairperson stressed the importance of continued active U.S. engagement in these areas.
Ms. Hooker praised the African Union’s leadership role on the continent and reaffirmed U.S. support for African countries and AU diplomatic initiatives, particularly in the DRC, Sudan, and Libya. The two sides also discussed setting a suitable date for the next annual high-level dialogue between the United States and the African Union.
