The Governor of Darfur, Minni Arko Minawi, met with General Ibrahim Jaber, the head of the National Joint Mechanism for Humanitarian Emergencies, to discuss issues related to facilitating humanitarian aid access to the region’s residents.

Minawi stated in a Facebook post on Sunday evening that his meeting with the Sovereignty Council member “addressed the significant challenges facing humanitarian efforts in the Darfur region.” He noted that they specifically discussed “the issue of permits and visas required for humanitarian teams and the importance of enhancing effective coordination between the relevant institutions amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan.” He emphasized “the need for collective efforts to alleviate the suffering of affected individuals and improve humanitarian conditions in the region.”

Residents of the Darfur region, particularly in its capital, El Fasher, have been under siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia for more than a year. This blockade has prevented the flow of humanitarian aid to citizens.

In June of last year, the UN Security Council issued Resolution 2736, calling on the RSF to lift the siege on El Fasher and allow humanitarian and medical aid to reach the city’s residents and surrounding camps, such as the Zamzam camps. However, the militia failed to comply with the resolution, and the Security Council was unable to take any action in response.
