On Thursday, the Federal Ministry of Health welcomed a delegation from the American organisation Samaritan’s Purse at Port Sudan Airport. The visit is part of the preparations for establishing a comprehensive field hospital to provide emergency services in the city of Gedaref. Present at the airport were Dr. Ismat Mustafa, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health; Major General Ahmed Abboud, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Defense; and Sumayya Al-Hadi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture and Information.
In his press statements at the airport, Dr Ismat Mustafa highlighted that Samaritan’s Purse has been active in Sudan for over 20 years, providing exceptional services in areas such as Hemshkorib, which was recently visited by Federal Minister of Health Dr Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim. He added that the arrival of emergency health experts from the organisation, along with medical equipment and supplies for the field hospital, will contribute to training health workers and establishing similar facilities in other areas.
Dr. Ismat praised the organisation’s role in various states, especially as a mediator in delivering medical supplies to South Kordofan under a recent agreement with the Government of South Sudan. He noted that the organization has a team of emergency health services experts and plans to work with Sudanese health personnel through field hospitals, starting with the one in Gedaref.
Darren Harder, the Country Director for Samaritan’s Purse in Sudan, emphasised that the organisation has been active in the medical field for over two decades and is ready to support emergency health services in Sudan. He announced that the organisation had completed procedures to establish the field hospital in Gedaref. He expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Health’s assistance in facilitating entry visas for their team.
Shaman Hampton, Medical Director for Samaritan’s Purse Hospital, stated that the delegation comprises 20 personnel tasked with setting up the field hospital. She mentioned that the hospital will treat 50 to 100 patients daily and conduct five daily surgical operations. She described the hospital as a gift to the Sudanese people in dire need of medical assistance.
