Collateral Damage

By: Dr. Eiman Abbas El-Nour

A new victim to this war
Damaged beyond repair
A friendship that survived
Against most odds
Home and away

I try to collect the fragments
scattered pieces of joy
Watching movies
Sharing stories
And endless pots of tea

Is it change that’s chasing people
Or fear of the same
Monotone
the devious hand of politics
Playing a monstrous game

While the thirsty land is waiting
And wind is singing through
the shelled out buildings
And the loyal children are dying
With smiles of contentment
Others are dividing the illusive cake
And dreaming of a new era
Of hypocrisy
