Chad: Closure of Border with Sudan

The government of the Republic of Chad has alerted the national and international public that the border between Chad and Sudan is closed effective immediately and until further notice.
A statement issued by the Chadian government on Monday said that this decision comes “in light of the repeated incursions and violations committed by conflicting forces in Sudan within Chadian territory.” The decision aims to “prevent any risk of the conflict spilling over into national territory, protect our citizens and refugee populations, and guarantee the stability, security, and territorial integrity of the nation.” It argued.
Under this Chadian decision, “border crossing points between Chad and Sudan will be closed until further notice, and the movement of people and goods across the border is suspended. However, special exceptions may be granted justified on purely humanitarian grounds after obtaining prior authorization from the competent authorities.”
The Chadian government statement added that, in accordance with international law, the government of the Republic of Chad reserves the right to respond to any aggression or violation of its territorial integrity and borders.
The government also called on “the residents of the affected areas to remain calm and vigilant, and to respect this decision.” Administrative and military authorities were also instructed to ensure the strict implementation of this measure.
It is worth noting that the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia launched an attack two days ago on the Sudanese army garrison in the border town of Al-Tina. The armed forces and their supporting forces repelled the attack, forcing the Rapid Support Forces elements to cross the border into Chad and engage with Chadian forces.
