Burhan: SAF Do Not Seek Power in Sudan, Will Hand Over to Sudanese People
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has reiterated that the SAF do not wish to continue ruling the country. He emphasized the army’s commitment to completing the nation-building process that began in 1985 and 2019, referring to the popular revolutions that toppled the regimes of Presidents Jaafar Nimeiri and Omar al-Bashir.
Burhan stressed the commitment to achieving the desired democratic transition, stating that “the people alone have the right to determine their own destiny and choose their rulers through the means they deem appropriate.”
Burhan was speaking on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of April 6th, which coincides with today Monday the 6th of April 2026. He recalled the response and alignment of the SAF leadership with the people’s call in 1985, and the repetition of the same scenario on April 6, 2019, culminating in what he called “the steadfast stand of the Sudanese people on April 15, 2023, and their support for their forces in the Battle of Dignity against the rebellion.”
The Chairman of the Sovereign Council described the Sudanese people as heroic and noble, noting that they do not accept humiliation or subjugation, nor do they stand idly by in the face of any tyranny. He added, “The slogan ‘One Army, One People’ is not just words, but a reality that manifested itself in its highest form during the Battle of Dignity, when everyone rose up to defend the homeland.”
He said, “When the Sudanese people are in dire straits, they turn to the armed forces, and therefore we respond to their demands immediately. These are shining moments in the history of the armed forces and honorable stances in support of the Sudanese people.” He affirmed that the people’s will prevail and will not stand idly by in face of arrogance and tyranny.
Al-Burhan saluted the former leaders of the armed forces who established the principle of siding with the popular will, “One people, one army,” and their joining the revolution in 1985 and 2019, standing shoulder to shoulder with the Sudanese people in the battle for dignity. He also offered his prayers for the souls of the martyrs who sacrificed themselves for the homeland, sending his greetings to every Sudanese who avenged dignity and the victory of the armed forces, and to all the revolutionaries in the previous popular revolutions, most recently in 2019.
