The President of the Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, received on Tuesday in Port Sudan the African Union Representative to Sudan, Mohamed Belaish, in the presence of Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Omar Siddig, and Acting Director of the African Affairs Department, Ambassador Ahmed Youssef.
Following the meeting, Mohamed Belaish stated in a press briefing that he conveyed the greetings of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Ambassador Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, to the President of the Sovereign Council, reaffirming the AU’s support and concern for Sudan’s unity and stability. He added that his visit to Sudan aims to explore avenues to achieve peace, security, and stability in the country.
Belaish described the meeting as fruitful, transparent, and candid, noting that it covered the overall developments in Sudan. He expressed hope that Sudan would become a model for conflict resolution in Africa, highlighting that the formation of an independent civilian government made up of qualified national figures is an important step toward alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people, improving services, and initiating a gradual reconstruction process that would enable displaced persons and refugees to return to their homes.
The AU representative stated, “It is commendable that the armed forces continue to repel the rebellion and restore stability across Sudan,” stressing the importance of pursuing dialogue to resolve disputes and move beyond past grievances. He emphasized that the Jeddah Agreement signed on May 11, 2023, provides a solid foundation for ending the war and launching a serious national dialogue among the people of Sudan.
