Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed his deep concern over the escalation of violence in Sudan, especially in the vicinity of the city of Al Fashir , North Darfur, including reports of intensive attacks on the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps.
In a statement seen by Sudanhorizon, the Chairperson of the Commission noted that the attacks resulted in the deaths of civilians, including children and humanitarian workers. He described what was happening as unacceptable and a grave violation of humanitarian and international human rights laws.
The Chairperson sent his condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Sudan.
The African Union urged the parties besieging Al Fashir to end the blockade and ensure humanitarian access. He stressed that de-escalation was critical to protecting civilians and restoring peace.
The African Union also urged all parties concerned to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any actions that could lead to an escalation of tensions.
He stressed that the well-being of the Sudanese people must remain a top priority, and that all efforts should be directed towards creating an environment conducive to peace and sustainable development.
Sudan’s Permanent Mission in Addis Ababa has conducted contacts with the African Union and the relevant mechanisms to expose the egregious violations committed by the militia in Al Fashir and the Zamzam camp in particular.
It is worth noting that the violations committed by the Rapid Support Militia, including attacks on IDP camps and the city of Al Fashir, have received wide condemnation by international organizations, especially as the war enters its third year.
