As the US Legislators Argue Over Arms Exports, Sudan’s Name Pops Up

Washington – Sudanhorizon
Sudan’s name has been regularly mentioned in recent US lawmakers’ justifications for imposing restrictions, even if only nominal, on US arms sales to certain Arab countries. The aim is to prevent the use of such arms in committing crimes against humanity and genocide, as happened in Darfur.
These crimes were at the base of the US administration’s placing the Rapid Support Forces militias on the sanctions list for committing genocide in the region.
The US National Security Daily, a daily newspaper close to the American defense and security establishments, reports that Democrats in Congress are monitoring the situation in the US administration, seeking an opportunity to settle scores with President Trump. The paper learned that members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Sarah Jacobs (D-CA), Madeleine Dean (D-PA), and Joaquin Castro (D-TX), are seeking to introduce a bill to tighten controls on the movement of US weapons abroad that could be used to commit war crimes and harm civilians.
However, the paper says it does not expect the bill to pass, as Republicans are reluctant to oppose the “Make America Great Again” campaign launched by Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense. This indicates that Democrats are seeking to respond to the concerns of a growing segment of voters concerned about the role of US-made weapons in conflicts from Gaza to Sudan.
Observers note that the mention of Sudan’s name, is a reference to solid reports and accusations that US weapons purchased by the United Arab Emirates ended up in the hands of the rebel Rapid Support Forces. These weapons were used in the Sudanese war, to commit violations that the US itself has called genocide.
It should be noted that the mechanical majority has repeatedly resorted to this approach to thwart such a project, but it clearly exposed the use of US weapons in attacks on civilians in Darfur.
The Pentagon has taken steps to close US military offices, aiming to mitigate the harm that could be inflicted on civilians in response to US airstrikes.
The Democrats’ bill aims to establish a monitoring program called “Silver Shield” to verify whether US weapons have been used in humanitarian or human rights violations. If passed, the bill would also explicitly prohibit US arms sales to countries or military units that have committed human rights violations.
