An Inter-Departments Plan to Eliminate Unregulated Mining Impact in Khartoum’s Soba Area

The Secretary-General of the Higher Council for Environment and Urban and Rural Development in Khartoum State, Professor Ghada Hussein Al-Awad, met on Friday at her office in Al-Taif with the Director of the Environment Department at the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company, Abdul Rahim Sayed Ahmed, to discuss the removal of tailings in the Soba East area.

In press statements, the Secretary-General emphasized commitment to the established plan for disposing of the waste from unregulated mining and the need to raise awareness about the dangers of traditional mining among the residents of Soba and students in affected schools.
She also stressed the importance of conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment for all mining projects in the state.
Ghada Hussein noted the Khartoum Governor’s interest in the issue of tailings disposal and thanked the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company for its commitment to covering the costs of removing mining waste in Soba as part of its social responsibility.
Abdel Rahim Ali affirmed the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company’s commitment to removing the waste from unregulated mining operations in cooperation with the state-appointed committee. He stressed the need for effective coordination and partnership between the council and the company on all mining-related matters in the state, particularly given the anticipated developments in the mining sector in the coming period.
In a related development, the Director of the General Administration for Awareness and Media directed the implementation of an intensive awareness program as of coming Sunday. The meeting also endorsed a program for planting trees in schools in the area and conducting awareness campaigns in schools in Soba East.
