Al-Jakoumi: Sudanese Forces Push for Burhan’s Presidential Candidacy in Elections Within Six Months
Cairo – Sudanhorizon – Sabah Moussa
Mohammed Ahmed Sir Al-Khatim Al-Jakoumi, head of the National Forces Coordination Committee, has revealed a trend adopted by a number of Sudanese political and civil forces to push for the Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to run for the presidency of Sudan in elections to be held within six months.
In an exclusive statement to Sudanhorizon website on Friday, Al-Jakoumi said that this trend aims to resolve the controversy surrounding the legitimacy of the Sudanese state and its institutions. He explained that they are pushing for Burhan to relinquish his military uniform and run in presidential elections to lead the country for a five-year term.
He added that this proposal was presented to Burhan a year ago, but he rejected it at the time. He noted that the forces supporting the idea decided to revive it as a way to address the issue of political legitimacy in the country.
Al-Jakoumi explained that the Northern Alliance, which he heads, will submit a proposal to the Sudanese Armed Forces on Saturday, to amend the Constitutional Declaration, as it is a party to the Juba Peace Agreement and the Constitutional Declaration. He noted that other Sudanese forces share this position.
Al-Jakoumi called on European Union countries to review their policies toward Sudan and respect the will of the Sudanese people, emphasizing that the masses are united behind the legitimate leadership represented by Burhan, which he believes reflects the popular choice.
He said he informed the French ambassador to Sudan during a meeting on Friday evening that respecting the will of the Sudanese people begins with official recognition of the Sudanese government. He pointed out that Burhan’s popularity has led civilian forces to nominate him as an independent civilian candidate for the presidency in the upcoming elections, with the support of broad segments of the population.
He also called for amending the Constitutional Declaration, dissolving the Sovereign Council, and holding elections under international supervision, particularly from European Union countries, as a guarantor of the integrity of the electoral process.
Al-Jakoumi criticized the European Union’s attempts to impose its vision on the five-member mechanism concerned with resolving the Sudanese crisis, by favoring the “Tassis” and “Sumud” alliances over the rest of the national and civil forces, stressing that these two alliances have no future in Sudan, and that the Sudanese people have the right to determine their political choices.
