Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met on Monday with the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Ramtane Lamamra, in the presence of Foreign Minister Ambassador Ali Youssef.
During the meeting, Al-Burhan reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to working jointly with the United Nations to develop a shared vision for future collaboration across various fields. He emphasized the Sudanese government’s commitment to protecting civilians from the atrocities of the insurgent Al-Dagalo militia, calling on the United Nations and the international community to exert greater pressure and issue more explicit condemnations of the militia’s violations.
Al-Burhan urged the international system to take decisive action against countries supporting the rebels and providing them with aid. He called for the UN to enforce Security Council resolutions prohibiting the transfer of weapons into the Darfur region and to take measures to halt attacks on the city of El Fasher.
He also stated that once citizens return to their homes and villages, a political process will begin, including elections, allowing the Sudanese people to determine their political future without external interference.
In a press statement, Lamamra conveyed greetings from UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Al-Burhan. He noted that the meeting discussed the situation in Sudan and highlighted the United Nations’ engagement in and encouragement of a negotiated resolution to the crisis. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to help the Sudanese people overcome this ordeal and swiftly return to normalcy to focus on reconstruction and recovery.
Lamamra further acknowledged that the war, which has lasted nearly two years, has caused significant loss of life. He affirmed the United Nations’ commitment to reducing the conflict’s duration and impact and minimizing casualties.
The envoy also expressed the readiness of UN institutions to strengthen cooperation with Sudan to reach a resolution to the crisis and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
