African Union Source Describes Delegation Visit to Khartoum as an “Important Step”

Diplomatic sources within the African Union described the high-level visit by an AU delegation to Sudan these days, headed by Ambassador Mohammed Belaiche, Personal Envoy to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and head of its office in Khartoum, as “an important step in the right direction.”

The sources told Sudanhorizon that the visit comes within the framework of implementing the African Union Peace and Security Council’s resolutions on Sudan issued last year, in addition to inspecting the AU office in Khartoum and assessing its condition following the war that affected the capital.

They emphasized that the presence of an AU ambassador in Khartoum—after the government’s return to the city—is vital for strengthening communication and monitoring developments on the ground. It also reflects the level of security stability the country is witnessing, especially with the resumption of operations by a large number of embassies and international organizations from the capital.

An African Union delegation had arrived in Port Sudan last Sunday on an official three-day visit. The delegation, headed by Belaiche, includes a number of officials from various AU departments. It held a series of meetings and discussions with government officials in Khartoum, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi El-Din Salem.

The Foreign Minister provided a detailed briefing to the delegation on developments in the country, noting the government’s relocation to Khartoum, which was followed by the return of several United Nations organizations and other agencies to resume their operations from the national capital.

He affirmed the stability of the situation and the availability of basic services, expressing the ministry’s readiness to provide all necessary facilitation for reopening the African Union office in Khartoum.
