Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon
The African Development Bank (AfDB) announced the allocation of $379.6 million to finance vital projects in Sudan, in line with the government’s priorities in water, health, and agriculture sectors. These projects are scheduled for implementation between 2026 and 2028.
This announcement came during a meeting between the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, and the Executive Director of the AfDB’s Board of Executive Directors, Dr. Siddiq Al-Obeid, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Port Sudan on Monday.
The Minister of Finance emphasized the importance of the AfDB as a primary source of financing for Sudan, alongside the World Bank. He stressed the need to maximize the use of available financing opportunities to fund development and rebuild what was destroyed by the war, with a focus on basic services projects, environmental sanitation, solar energy, and infrastructure projects such as national and continental roads, railways, and airport rehabilitation.
Ibrahim reviewed the current economic performance, the challenges facing the current phase, and its priorities. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation and coordination with regional and international organizations implementing Bank-funded projects through third parties.
For his part, the Ministry’s Undersecretary for Planning, Mohamed Bashar, emphasized the importance of Sudan benefiting from the technical assistance and institutional and human capacity-building programs offered by the African Development Institute. He stressed the need to enhance the Agricultural Bank’s capacity to finance small producers.
The Bank’s Executive Director, Dr. Siddiq Al-Obeid, revealed that the Bank’s President had approved updating the reconstruction study in coordination with the World Bank, in accordance with the Sudanese government’s priorities. An agreement was also reached to establish a coordination platform comprising all donors to maximize the benefits of the funded projects.
