A 3 Million Dollars Grant by Japan for a River Nile State Project

The Japanese government has announced a new $3 million grant to Sudan, earmarked for a new wheat project in River Nile State.
Minister of Finance, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, affirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening economic cooperation with Japan and benefiting from its expertise in disaster and war recovery. He emphasized the importance of Tokyo’s shift from humanitarian aid to development cooperation in the country.
During his meeting on Tuesday, at the Port Sudan government complex with the Chargé d’Affaires of the Japanese Embassy in Sudan, and in the presence of the Undersecretary of Planning and the Director General of External Finance at the Ministry, Dr. Jibril expressed his country’s desire to see Japan participateing in the reconstruction and rebuilding of areas devastated by the rebel militia war in Sudan.
This would focus on rehabilitating infrastructure and basic services for citizens, assisting Sudan in achieving its Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the field of renewable energy for water treatment plants and in the agricultural sector, expanding the scope of the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA) work in the area of clean cities, and participating in the joint World Bank and African Development Bank initiative to provide electricity to 300 million people in Africa by 2030.
The Undersecretary of Planning at the Ministry of Finance, Mohamed Bashar, emphasized the importance of increasing opportunities to benefit from Japan’s expertise in building national capacities in the country, noting the necessity of expanding economic and investment cooperation between the two nations.
For his part, the Japanese Chargé d’Affaires, Dr. Takanobu Nakahara, stated that his visit to Sudan aimed to follow up on his country’s existing projects and their progress.
He revealed a new grant of three million dollars for the new wheat project in River Nile State, part of a package encompassing 19 state-level projects to support food security in Sudan.
He explained that the grant is being implemented in coordination between JICA and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
