UN:Darfur Has Become the World’s Humanitarian Epicenter

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, said he received “strong assurances” from Sudanese government authorities and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during his meetings with both parties regarding full and safe access for humanitarian convoys and civilians in the country. He added, “Let’s see if they will honor the commitments they made to me.”

This came during a video conference with journalists in New York from the Adré border crossing between Sudan and Chad, as part of his visit to Sudan, which he said was focused primarily on Darfur, “the world’s humanitarian epicenter.”
Fletcher began his visit to Sudan with meetings with Sudanese officials in Port Sudan, the interim capital, and then traveled to Darfur, where he visited displaced people in Tawila. He likely met with rebel leaders in Nyala before traveling to neighboring Chad.
