UN Condemns Escalation of Drone Attacks in Sudan
Sudanhorizon – Agencies
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the escalation of drone attacks by the parties to the conflict in Sudan and their devastating impact on civilians.
A statement issued by the Secretary-General’s spokesperson on Saturday said that drone strikes across Sudan, as well as in Abyei, the area between Sudan and South Sudan, had killed hundreds of civilians, including women and children, in what constitutes violations of international humanitarian law.
In the statement, the Secretary-General denounced all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, including healthcare facilities.
He called on the parties to the conflict to avoid putting civilians and critical infrastructure at risk and to agree without delay on a cessation of hostilities as a first step towards ending the devastating conflict.
Guterres renewed his urgent appeal to the parties to engage in good faith with mediation efforts. The statement affirmed that the United Nations stands ready to support any efforts aimed at advancing a sustainable political solution that reflects the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
