Sudan’s embassy in India on Wednesday hosted a group of Master’s and PhD students specializing in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Sudan’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Mohamed Abdalla Ali El-Tom, delivered a lecture covering Sudanese-Indian relations—addressing their history, current status, and prospects for future development.
In his introduction, the Ambassador outlined aspects of Sudan’s history and ancient civilizations, as well as its strategic geographical location. He highlighted Sudan’s role as a meeting point connecting the Arab world, North and East Africa, the Sahel region, the Horn of Africa, and the Red Sea. He also explained the nature, dimensions, and scale of the external aggression facing Sudan, specifically addressing the UAE’s role in fueling the conflict and supporting the rebellious Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.
He detailed the militia’s violations, the systematic destruction it has caused, and its targeting of infrastructure and facilities, while outlining the Sudanese government’s efforts to achieve peace and stability and to create favorable conditions for reconstruction and development.
Furthermore, the Ambassador discussed the deep historical ties between Sudan and India, noting the long-standing relationship between the two peoples. He highlighted the political, cultural, and academic bonds shared by the two nations over the past decades, as well as their shared stances on supporting principles of independence, sovereignty, and South-South cooperation, alongside their roles in the Non-Aligned Movement and Afro-Asian cooperation. Regarding the prospects of building an economic partnership between Sudan and India, the Ambassador outlined Sudan’s potential and resources—particularly in agriculture, livestock, mining, and energy—as well as its strategic location on the Red Sea and proximity to various African and Arab markets. He emphasized that these attributes position Sudan as a key partner in efforts to achieve food security, development, and regional economic integration. He further noted that, despite current challenges, Sudan possesses the human and natural resources, along with the strategic location, to play a significant role within its African, Arab, and international spheres.

In this context, the Ambassador highlighted areas of cooperation that could serve as pillars for a future partnership between Sudan and India, foremost among them being agriculture and food security, livestock and the dairy industry, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, renewable energy, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), digital transformation, and education and capacity building.
He pointed out that India’s experience in agricultural development, technology, pharmaceuticals, SME empowerment, and digital transformation offers vast opportunities for cooperation with Sudan, grounded in partnership, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and mutual benefit.
The Ambassador also encouraged Indian students to view Sudan through the lens of its history, civilization, potential, and future, rather than solely through the exceptional circumstances it is currently facing. He underscored that Sudan remains a country of strategic importance to Africa, the Arab world, and the Red Sea region, and that its stability and development serve interests that extend well beyond its national borders. Hosting students from Jawaharlal Nehru University is part of the Sudanese Embassy in New Delhi’s efforts to strengthen academic and cultural diplomacy and to open further channels of communication with Indian society—particularly the youth and university sectors. This initiative aims to provide Indian society with an accurate understanding of the situation in Sudan and to foster the historic ties of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting featured lively interaction and a dynamic exchange of questions between the Ambassador and the students regarding ongoing developments in Sudan, Sudanese-Indian relations, regional affairs, and opportunities for cooperation in education, development, and reconstruction. The Ambassador emphasized the Embassy’s commitment to maintaining engagement with Indian universities, students, and researchers, and to promoting academic and people-to-people dialogue between Sudan and India.
