Sudan’s Address to UN General Assembly Postponed

Sudan’s address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which had been scheduled for Thursday according to the UN program, has been postponed.

A senior official at Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Sudanhorizon that the postponement was due to the inability of Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan to travel to New York after the U.S. government did not issue him a visa and, according to the official, conditioned the visa on his acceptance of a truce agreement with the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The official added that priority for delivering speeches at the UN is given to heads of state, followed by heads of government, and then foreign ministers representing their respective countries.

According to the schedule issued for the session, the high-level general debate will be suspended today and tomorrow before resuming on September 27 and 28. A new date is expected to be determined over the next two days, with Sudan’s address to be delivered by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, who is currently heading Sudan’s delegation.
