Energy Minister: Electricity Sector Achieves Gains Despite Unprecedented Attacks on Infrastructure and Staff

Energy Minister Engineer and Adviser Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed praised the significant efforts and achievements of personnel in Sudan’s electricity sector despite the exceptional circumstances the country has faced.

Speaking on Wednesday at the conclusion of a workshop on developing a strategic vision for the electricity sector, where he received the workshop’s recommendations, the minister said the sector had been subjected to unprecedented targeting in recent period, affecting both its infrastructure and workforce.

The minister explained that electricity represents the backbone of life, reconstruction, and development in Sudan. He noted that rehabilitation efforts are progressing in parallel with the return of citizens and in line with actual needs, under short- and long-term plans to provide energy for the industrial, agricultural, and residential sectors.

For his part, Engineer Abdullah Ahmed Mohamed, Director General of Sudan Electricity Holding Company, said the workshop had discussed the real challenges facing the sector with the participation of specialists and experts. He expressed hope that its recommendations would receive the necessary support to establish a roadmap that contributes to stabilizing electricity supplies.

The workshop identified a number of challenges, most notably rising operating and maintenance costs, the availability and increasing cost of fuel, debts and financial obligations, network instability, weak protection systems, equipment failures, and the migration of skilled personnel.

The recommendations emphasized the importance of implementing reforms to rationalize costs, securing financing, seeking alternatives to conventional fuel, and strengthening the stability of the electricity network.
