Darfur Information Minister Announces Plans for Comprehensive Regional Media Forum
Khartoum – Mariam Abshir
The Ministry of Culture and Information of the Darfur Regional Government is preparing to organize the First Comprehensive Media Forum for All Media Institutions and Journalists in the Darfur Region in the coming days.
The forum is scheduled to be held in the national capital, Omdurman, under the theme “Towards Professional and Effective Media in Support of the Battle of Dignity.” It will discuss a range of key issues related to Sudan’s current situation and the role expected of the media during this critical period.
Ahmed Abu Shanab, Minister of Culture and Information and official spokesperson for the Darfur Regional Government, told Sudanhorizon that although the forum is primarily dedicated to media professionals from Darfur, it will also be open to the wider national media in all its forms.
He said the organizers aim to bring together a large number of journalists and media professionals who covered the Battle of Dignity and made sacrifices in what he described as efforts to liberate the country from the RSF militia.
Abu Shanab added that the forum will feature a number of working papers addressing ways to support the Battle of Dignity militarily, politically, socially, and through the media. Discussions will also focus on supporting the military campaign, strengthening diplomatic efforts, mobilizing public support for the Sudanese Armed Forces, and increasing pressure on the RSF militia.
He further claimed that communities previously aligned with the militia have begun distancing themselves from recruitment efforts after realizing the scale of the losses suffered by its fighters.
The minister also noted that cultural identity and heritage preservation will be a major theme of the forum through the promotion of cultural programs. Other topics will include combating hate speech, rejecting racism, supporting both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Joint Forces as complementary national forces, avoiding rhetoric that fuels ethnic divisions, and preserving Sudan’s social fabric.
In addition, the forum will address humanitarian issues, including the conditions in displacement camps, and explore ways to produce media coverage that accurately reflects the scale of the humanitarian suffering experienced by internally displaced people.
