Sudanese-UN Meeting in Asmara Explores Opportunities for Coordinating Humanitarian Efforts

The Sudanese Ambassador to Eritrean, Osama Ahmed Abdel-Bari, received Ms. Edem Wosorno, Director of Global Operations at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in New York, at his office on Friday. Ms. Wosorno is currently on visit to Asmara.
A Sudanese diplomatic source told Sudanhorizon that the meeting addressed the evolving humanitarian situation in Sudan in light of the challenges posed by the war. The Sudanese Ambassador reviewed the increasing humanitarian needs in several conflict-affected areas, emphasizing the importance of the international community, and OCHA in particular, playing a more active role in supporting affected Sudanese citizens and providing basic necessities to the most vulnerable groups.
Ambassador Abdulbari stressed the importance of ensuring the success of humanitarian efforts by strengthening full coordination with relevant national authorities in Sudan and working in accordance with the priorities set by official Sudanese institutions. This will guarantee that aid reaches those who need it efficiently and effectively, while simultaneously upholding the principles of national sovereignty and respecting the legal and regulatory frameworks governing humanitarian work in Sudan.
The source added that the meeting emphasized the necessity of keeping the humanitarian response exclusively focused on alleviating the suffering of civilians and supporting affected communities. This will contribute to strengthening stability and supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts in areas that have regained security and stability.
For her part, the UN official commended the distinguished relations and constructive cooperation between the UN office in Asmara and the Sudanese embassy. She praised the level of coordination and understanding that has characterized the relationship between the two sides, and the resulting positive contribution to addressing numerous humanitarian issues of mutual concern. She affirmed the UN’s commitment to continuing its humanitarian efforts in accordance with internationally adopted principles and working in coordination with relevant partners to support those affected by the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, based on national needs.
