The Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council (the collective Presidency) and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, appeared this morning, Thursday, January 1st, standing in front of the main entrance of the “old” Presidential Palace in Khartoum, from where he addressed the Sudanese people on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the country’s independence.

In what appeared to be an impromptu speech, the Chairman of the Sovereign Council said: “I am here to affirm that the Sudanese people, just as they made history in this place in 1885 and in 1956, are now making it again every year, until this nation rises, and this people rise.”

Al-Burhan saluted the “Forefathers of glory and the first generation of independence,” as well as all Sudanese people everywhere, who, he stressed, have persevered, struggled, fought, and resisted every aggressor.

He also saluted SAF members, the security forces, and the forces supporting the army, “who are now engaged in similar battle, the battle for independence, independence from oppression, barbarity, and colonialism in its new guise.”

Al-Burhan added that the battle for dignity is an existential battle “that we are all waging, the loyal and devoted people of Sudan without exception. This battle has united us and united our conscience. We assure you, our citizens everywhere, in Darfur and Kordofan, that victory is coming, and that the Sudanese are coming to you, just as they gathered here in this place in 1885 from the east and west of Sudan, and from its south and north, and expelled the coloniser. They also gathered here in 1956 from all corners of Sudan in this same place and expelled the coloniser. We will surely gather here again as Sudanese and celebrate the expulsion of the rebels, traitors, and those who spread discord from our land.”

In his speech, which lasted approximately four minutes, the Chairman of the Sovereign Council affirmed that victory belongs to the Sudanese people, stating, “Those who betrayed and sold out their country will not prevail, and those who go after the mirage of nations that speak of illusions will not achieve their goals on this land. The Sudanese people are determined and certain of their victory, and we assure them that we in the SAF and other Supporting Forces stand with the people and their revolution, supporting them in every step and every move until we achieve their aspirations for freedom, peace, and justice.”

He concluded by saluting the political forces committed to the nation’s cause, who have consistently stood alongside the Sudanese people and the Armed Forces.

He underlined in his statement directed to those elements that “the door remains open, and the doors of national reconciliation are still wide open. We welcome all who wish to join the nation and embrace the voice of truth. We say to them, this nation is vast and can accommodate everyone, and we will strive to establish the state of Sudan and a state of citizenship.”
