6 Tons of Spoiled Food and Damaged Fertilizers Destroyed in Gezira State

The Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization (SSMO), Gezira State Sector, announced that it has carried out a large-scale destruction operation involving six tons of expired and spoiled food products, in addition to quantities of fertilizers deemed unfit for use.
The destruction was conducted at the Hantoub incineration facility under extensive security and regulatory coordination, with the participation of the Supply and Consumer Protection Investigation Department, Security Police, Economic Security authorities, and the State Ministry of Health.
The operation followed a series of major seizures made by service and industrial inspection teams during intensive monitoring and inspection campaigns targeting markets and commercial establishments across Greater Wad Madani locality.
The destroyed items included a wide range of consumer products such as biscuits, tahini, cooking oils, snack foods, flour, lentils, canned goods, juices, soft drinks, ghee, tomato paste, and ketchup. Authorities determined that these products were unfit for consumption due to expiration or improper storage conditions.
The campaign was not limited to enforcement measures. It was accompanied by an extensive awareness and guidance program targeting shop owners, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of regularly checking product labels and expiration dates, complying with proper storage requirements, and organizing the display of goods in accordance with health and safety standards.
The program also emphasized protecting food products and cooking oils from direct sunlight and adhering to the specifications required for model grocery stores.
Dr. Badr El-Din Barbari, Director of the Gezira Sector, praised the efforts of the Service and Industrial Inspection Department for its continuous monitoring activities throughout the state’s localities.
He stressed the importance of educating the public about the dangers of expired products, noting that such goods can undergo chemical and physical changes affecting taste and odor and may, in many cases, lead to severe food poisoning.
Dr. Barbari further affirmed that the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization in Gezira State is working closely with technical and security agencies through a unified team approach to combat violations, prevent commercial fraud, and enforce regulations under strategic plans that place the health and well-being of the state’s residents at the forefront of priorities.
