Sudan Signs UN Charter 80; Reaffirms Commitment to International Principles
New York -Sudanhorizon
The Sudan Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Al-Harith Idris, signed the UN Charter 80 on Wednesday at UN Headquarters in New York, as part of the events organized by the UN General Assembly to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter.
This symbolic initiative, launched by the Office of the President of the General Assembly, represents a collective renewal of the commitment of member states to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and embodies the unity of the international organization under the slogan: “Better Together, One Charter, One Future.”
Following the signing, Ambassador Al-Harith Idris affirmed Sudan’s commitment to the principles upon which the UN Charter was founded, foremost among them respect for the sovereignty of states, the maintenance of international peace and security, and the promotion of international cooperation based on equality and mutual respect. He emphasized the importance of multilateralism and collective action in addressing current global challenges.
He added that the UN Charter, as the international agreement that emerged from the post-World War II era, represents the fundamental legal framework and safe haven for humanity against the ensuing chaos and turmoil.
He explained that the Charter will continue to represent the minimum level of reasonable practical consensus among nations in a world where geopolitical divisions are deepening and tendencies toward a chaotic and disorderly international order, governed by unilateral considerations and predatory practices, are on the rise. This makes adherence to the Charter’s principles more important and urgent than ever.
All UN member states are participating in this initiative. Permanent representatives will have the opportunity to sign the Charter during the designated period, and the officially signed Charter will be displayed in the General Assembly Hall during the informal commemorative meeting held to celebrate UN Charter Day on June 26.
This event comes as part of efforts to reaffirm the centrality of the United Nations Charter as the fundamental reference governing international relations, and to strengthen collective commitment to its principles and objectives in light of the increasing challenges and rapid transformations the world is witnessing.
