The 5th Edition of the Zain Interactive Forum, held last Tuesday (November 18) on Zain’s X platform, hosted a session titled “Charitable Work in Sudan: Its Advantages and Disadvantages.” The session featured a distinguished group of specialists and stakeholders in the field. Speakers included Dr. Yasser Yousef Al-Amin, President of the Sudanese Doctors Association in America; Dr. Abdel Latif Al-Bouni, a well-known journalist; Eng. Osama Mustafa Suleiman, Partnerships Coordinator at the Sudanese Red Crescent Society; and Mr. Othman Al-Jundi, a journalist and community activist. The discussion was moderated by journalist Lamia Mutawakkil.

Eng. Osama Mustafa Suleiman opened the discussion, emphasizing that charitable work in Sudan is deeply rooted, based on inherited values such as altruism, solidarity, and community mobilization. He pointed to profound historical examples such as the Darfur Caravan and the Kaaba Cover, explaining that charitable work was initially linked to individuals before its efforts were later organized through the Humanitarian Aid Commission, which introduced concepts of transparency, governance, and the necessity of preserving the dignity of beneficiaries.

For his part, Professor Othman Al-Jundi focused on the pivotal role of Sufi lodges (tekkias) during the current war, explaining that they have expanded from mosques and religious schools to neighborhoods and villages to provide food, humanitarian aid, and health and psychological services. He emphasized their influential role in strengthening solidarity among Sudanese people in different regions.

Dr. Yasser Youssef Al-Amin discussed the role of Sudanese abroad, particularly the SABA organization, in supporting charitable projects. He pointed out that remittances from expatriates are a vital source of funding for aid programs, noting that the organization has provided support to more than 100 health institutions within Sudan and contributed to the establishment and development of intensive care and neonatal units, including the largest unit in Port Sudan, in addition to supporting Al-Balak Hospital and numerous health facilities in Nyala, Dongola, Halfa, and other areas.

Dr. Abdul Latif Al-Buni concluded the discussion by emphasizing that the Sudanese people demonstrated an astonishing spirit of solidarity during the war, indicating that crises, despite their severity, reveal the best qualities of this nation. He called for leveraging this harsh experience to rebuild awareness and develop ways of thinking for a healthy homeland.

It is worth mentioning that the Zain Interactive Forum is held virtually via the X platform, and in its previous sessions it addressed issues of general and higher education, scientific research, e-learning, the positive use of social media, in addition to the challenges of the health sector during crises, hosting a number of the most prominent academic and media figures, most notably Professor Mamoun Humaida, Professor Mohamed El Sheikh Madani, Dr. El Tahir Hassan El Tahir, Dr. Amna Badri, Dr. Yahya Abdullah, Dr. Ezz El Din Kamel, Professor Ali Shamo, Dr. Salma Ishaq Al Khalifa, Professor Ahmed Hassan Fahl, Professor Ahlam Jabara and others.
