Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
International and regional condemnations have poured in following the Rapid Support Forces’ attacks on a World Food Programme (WFP) relief convoy in North Kordofan, amid increasing call for holding the militias accountable for those violations.
Last Friday, the Rapid Support Forces militia attacked a WFP aid convoy en route to displaced families near El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, and also targeted a vehicle carrying displaced people.
The head of the European Union Delegation to Sudan, Wolfram Vetter, stated in a Facebook post that the Rapid Support Forces’ attacks on the WFP aid convoy, the bus carrying displaced people, and the Al-Kuweik Hospital constitute flagrant and serious violations of all humanitarian standards and international law.
He added that these attacks will not go unpunished, and those responsible will be held accountable internationally.
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has on the other hand condemned the Rapid Support Forces’ attack on a vehicle carrying displaced people in North Kordofan, which resulted in civilian casualties.
It stated that it received with deep sorrow the news of the civilian deaths caused by the attack, which constitutes a clear and serious violation of international humanitarian law regarding the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure in conflicts.
It added that Turkey strongly condemns attacks targeting civilians and reiterate its call for ensuring safe and uninterrupted passage for civilians and guaranteeing unimpeded access for humanitarian aid.
For its part, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the targeting of a World Food Programme aid convoy in North Kordofan State, considering it a flagrant violation of the principles of international humanitarian law.
It called for the protection of humanitarian workers and ensuring the sustainable delivery of aid to those in need. It also renewed its call for concerted regional and international efforts to end the war through peaceful means.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has meanwhile condemned the repeated attacks targeting humanitarian aid convoys and medical facilities, including the recent attack on the World Food Programme convoy.
The attack on a medical facility, which resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries, including medical personnel, was deemed a grave violation of international humanitarian law, which guarantees the full protection of civilians and healthcare facilities.
The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassem Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, strongly condemned the targeting of a World Food Programme (WFP) aid convoy in North Kordofan.
He stated that this attack constitutes a serious violation of the principles of international humanitarian law and an unacceptable transgression of all rules and norms that guarantee the protection of humanitarian work.
In a related context, Somalia condemned the criminal attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against civilian facilities and WFP aid convoys in North and South Kordofan states.
Somalia demanded that the RSF immediately cease these violations without delay, fulfill its legal and moral obligations to protect civilians and ensure safe and unconditional access for humanitarian aid, and fully comply with the Jeddah Declaration on the Protection of Civilians in Sudan. Somalia reiterated its unwavering support for the unity, sovereignty, security, and stability of Sudan, declaring its support for regional and international efforts aimed at ending the war and warning against the dangers of any external interference, which directly fuels the conflict.
The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the attack targeting a World Food Programme aid convoy and medical facilities in Kordofan.
On Saturday, Saudi Arabia and Britain explicitly condemned the drone attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces targeting aid convoys and medical facilities in Kordofan. The incident was also condemned by the United States.
