Geneva -Sudanhorizon
Sudanese Prime Minister, Kamil Idris, on Thursday met with Dr. Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). During the meeting, Idris reviewed the current health situation in the country and discussed ways to support and strengthen Sudan’s health system, which has been crippled by rebel militias’ destruction of the infrastructure in the country.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of providing essential medicines and life-saving medical supplies and supporting national programs aimed at achieving universal health coverage, particularly the malaria eradication project.
Idris presented the Director-General with a detailed list of urgent medical and pharmaceutical needs required in the coming period. The WHO Director-General approved the list and also agreed to support the “Government of Hope” project to eradicate malaria in Sudan.
The Prime Minister debriefed WHO officials on the Sudanese government’s peace initiative, noting that achieving peace is the shortest path to addressing the humanitarian and health crisis in Sudan.
He pointed out that the Sudanese government has presented this initiative to the Security Council in New York on December 22, 2015, with the aim of achieving a comprehensive settlement and lasting peace.
For his part, WHO Director-General commended the Sudanese government’s efforts to promote public health, expressing the organization’s support for the government’s peace initiative and its readiness to continue cooperation in the health sector to achieve the goals of health and well-being for the Sudanese community.
