The United States, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar on Saturday condemned the attack carried out by the Rapid Support Forces militia on a mosque in the city of Al-Fasher, in North Darfur state, western Sudan, Friday.
The attack, which targeted worshipers during morning prayers, left at least75 civilians dead, according to the governor of North Darfur, who also condemned the killing.
In a statement, US President’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Saad Boules, said that the United States strongly condemns the horrific attack on worshipers gathered for prayer in a mosque in Al-Fasher, which tragically killed 75 people.
He stressed that this attack, which is an act of violence against civilians engaged in peaceful worship, serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for peace and stability in Sudan.
Boules said that his country is committed to supporting efforts to end the cycle of violence, protect civilians, and advance a just and lasting peace in Sudan.
The Rapid Support Forces militia deployed thousands of armed men in the villages surrounding Al-Fasher after forcibly displacing the civilian residents, in order to prevent the delivery of supplies, aid, and medicine to the city, which it has been besieging since April 2024.  The militia does not hesitate to kill anyone it believes is attempting to deliver food to the city.
For its part, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, condemned the attack on the Al-Daraja neighborhood mosque in Al-Fasher, which resulted in the killing and wounding of tens of civilians while they were performing the morning prayer, in a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.
The statement said that the Kingdom rejects attacks on civilians and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Sudan to spare its people further suffering and destruction.
It also called for the protection of civilians in accordance with the Jeddah Declaration.
For its part, the Qatari Foreign Ministry condemned the attack on the mosque in al- Fasher, stating that the shelling constituted a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.
It added that Qatar rejects the targeting of places of worship and the terrorizing of civilians, emphasizing that Doha’s firm position is one of rejecting violence, terrorism, and criminal acts, regardless of their motives or justifications.
