US Secretary of State Calls UAE Counterpart on Sudan and Gaza

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Friday evening, emphasizing the importance of achieving a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan.

Deputy State Department Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Rubio discussed with Al Nahyan joint efforts to implement President Trump’s comprehensive plan to end the conflict in Gaza, and that the two ministers affirmed the importance of achieving a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan and the strategic relationship between the United States and the UAE.

Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said last Wednesday that “something must be done” to stop the flow of weapons used by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The RSF has been widely accused of committing atrocities in the country, including the recent massacre of civilians in El Fasher.

“We know the parties involved,” the Secretary said, adding, “That’s why they are part of the Quartet,” referring to the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, countries involved in the US-led efforts to promote peace in Sudan.

Sudan accuses the UAE, a key US ally in the peace process, of arming the RSF, though Emirati officials have repeatedly denied these charges.
