UoK Participates in Shaping the International “Planetary Compass” Report
Khartoum – Sudanhorizon
The University of Khartoum administration stated that the Director of the Institute of Environmental Studies at the university, Dr. Hisham Salah El-Din Shazly, received on Sunday a letter of appreciation and thanks from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for his participation as a Peer Reviewer in the preparation of the Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) report for 2025, describing this as a high-level international recognition.
According to a statement issued by the university’s Media Administration, the recognition was not limited to the administrative aspect alone, but extended to include special appreciation for the efforts of the scientific peer reviewers — including Dr. Hisham Shazly — in the ministerial declaration issued by the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi.
This report is considered the primary scientific reference relied upon by countries worldwide in shaping their environmental policies, granting its contributors the “highest professional distinction” as international advisors.
The “Planetary Compass” report represents a global guide for confronting the three planetary crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The distinctive feature of this edition lies in its shift from merely diagnosing problems to proposing solutions for reimagining food and energy systems, ensuring that government policy recommendations are evidence-based, and focusing on resource sustainability and protecting soil from industrial toxins.
Dr. Shazly’s participation comes as an extension of a distinguished track record. He holds a PhD in Animal Production from the University of Khartoum and has made notable contributions to major international and national projects, including:
• The NAP Readiness Project in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
• The SudaNext Project for managing water, energy, and food resources.
• Membership in technical committees of the Sudanese Standards and Metrology Organization and participation in Climate Conferences (COP).
The university’s Media Administration considered that the presence of the name “University of Khartoum” in such a complex technical file enhances its international ranking and reinforces its leadership role. It added that this achievement sends a powerful message of resilience: while war has sought to undermine Sudanese academic institutions, the “beautiful and resilient” university rises again through its sons and daughters, reclaiming its prestigious position on the global map of scientific research.
