UNSC Holds Closed Consultations on Sudan
NEW YORK – Sudanhorizon
Members of the Security Council will hold closed consultations this afternoon (Wednesday) EST on the situation in the Sudan.
According to the official Security Council website, Denmark, France, Greece, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom (the penholder) requested the meeting to discuss the latest developments in the humanitarian and political situation in Sudan, particularly in light of the escalating violence in El-Fasher, North Darfur, the ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire, and recent diplomatic meetings on Sudan, including those held during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.
The Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Sudan, Ramdane Lamamra, and the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, are expected to brief the Council.
Earlier this month, the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy held meetings in Nairobi, Kenya, with representatives of political forces allied with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and also held discussions on the same topic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Meanwhile the opposition group “Sumud” and the Democratic Bloc for Freedom and Change have rejected the African Union’s invitation to hold consultations on October 6 regarding the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, a move that the UN and the Quartet have supported.
