The Head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Office in Sudan congratulated the Sudanese government on the successful recovery of a number of Sudanese antiquities looted by the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia, noting that this achievement demonstrates Sudan’s commitment to protecting its cultural heritage during times of crises and conflicts.

The international official affirmed, while addressing the event organized today (Tuesday) by the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism at the Al-Rabwa Complex in Port Sudan on the occasion of the recovery of a number of looted Sudanese antiquities, UNESCO’s full commitment to supporting Sudan in the protection of antiquities and heritage, given their significance as a historical and civilizational legacy.

He said that this sends a strong message to the international community that Sudanese cultural heritage will not be lost and will remain an important part of Sudan’s national identity.

He pointed to UNESCO’s cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism in inventorying and restoring the collections. UNESCO also provided the necessary equipment—such as laptops, printers, desktop computers, and cameras—to museum staff to enable them to continue their important work in cataloguing collections and identifying looted artifacts.
