UN Condemns Attack on Aid Convoy in Darfur and Calls for Immediate Investigation

Port Sudan – Sudanhorizon

The United Nations Acting Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Luca Renda, has called for an immediate and independent investigation into the targeting of a World Food Programme (WFP) aid convoy in Darfur, western Sudan, on Wednesday.

A drone attacked the convoy of 16 trucks in Mellit locality, North Darfur, resulting in three trucks being destroyed after catching fire, while the drivers managed to escape unharmed.

In a statement issued Thursday, the coordinator explained that the convoy had arrived in Mellit on August 16, coming from the WFP logistics base in Tina, Chad, to deliver assistance to Mellit and surrounding areas. The attack occurred while the trucks were being unloaded at a partner organization’s warehouse.

The UN official said: “We call for an immediate and independent investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable.”

He added: “We strongly condemn this attack on aid workers, humanitarian assistance, and assets. This latest incident adds to a series of unacceptable attacks in recent months that have deprived those in desperate need of life-saving food assistance.”

The statement stressed that unimpeded access to the most vulnerable families in Darfur and across Sudan is critical. Humanitarian workers and resources must never be targeted.
