The United Nations stated that after two years of violent conflict, Sudan is now facing a severe and growing crisis of explosive ordnance, threatening civilians and hindering humanitarian efforts.
Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, called for the rapid expansion of mine action activities across the country.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, she noted that as the world marks the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action on April 4 under the theme “A Safe Future Starts Here,”
“The widespread presence of unexploded ordnance is a silent killer permeating Sudan’s villages, towns, and cities.” She added that each day without action increases the danger to civilians’ lives, stressing that explosive remnants pose major risks and barriers to safe movement, access to essential services, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The statement concluded by emphasising “the urgent need for support to scale up mine action efforts—not only to warn communities of the dangers but also to remove these threats, ensuring safe roads, homes, schools, hospitals, and cities for the Sudanese people.”
