UN: Attacks on Civilians and Civilian Infrastructure in Sudan Must Cease

Christine Hembrock, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Acting Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan issued a press statement today (Sunday) emphasising the urgent need to halt attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Sudan, which have been persistently carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia across various parts of the country.
Hembrock expressed the UN’sUN’s deep concern over the recent wave of attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Sudan, stating that they “”constitute a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.””
The statement noted that on 30 May, the Social Insurance Hospital in El Obeid, North Kordofan State, was struck by multiple drone attacks, killing at least six healthcare workers and injuring more than 15 others. Patients and medical staff were caught in the line of fire inside a facility meant for healing and hope. “”Hospitals are not battlegrounds—they are protected under international law and must remain so,”” the statement stressed.
Just a day earlier, on 29 May, the World Food Programme (WFP) facilities in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, were repeatedly shelled, causing significant damage to a critical humanitarian hub. Reports indicate that both attacks were carried out by the RSF.
The UN statement underscored that these facilities are essential for survival amid Sudan’s worsening humanitarian crisis, warning that attacks on humanitarian assets endanger millions of people and deprive them of life-saving aid. “These attacks must stop immediately,” it demanded.
“I call on all parties to the conflict to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians and civilian property. Humanitarian workers and facilities must never be targeted,” the statement said, further urging that “those responsible for these acts must be held accountable.”
