The Governor of Darfur and Chairman of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, Minni Arko Minawi, held talks in Port Sudan on Monday with Pekka Haavisto, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to Sudan, and Naila Hajjar, Political Affairs Officer and Special Assistant to the Envoy.

The meeting addressed a number of important issues, primarily the humanitarian and political situation in the country. The UN delegation expressed its deep concern regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan in general, and in Darfur in particular, stressing the need for ensuring the continued flow of humanitarian aid to those affected.
The meeting also discussed the political track of the Sudanese crisis, with both sides emphasizing the need to launch a comprehensive dialogue aimed at achieving a humanitarian truce. For his part, Minawi affirmed that any political initiative must be based on a clear vision built on four fundamental pillars: preserving the unity of Sudan, both its people and its territory; maintaining the unity of the Sudanese government and its armed forces; and excluding the United Arab Emirates from any role in any future political dialogue.
Both sides agreed on the importance of continuing coordination and joint work with international partners to facilitate dialogue between the various components of the Sudanese people, in order to contribute to ending the current crisis.
