To Avoid Crocodiles Vicious Attacks, Civil Defense Urges People to Stay Away from Nile Banks

Civil Defense forces have warned people against nearing the banks of Nile River along its entire length and urged them to refrain from sitting or swimming during this period.

On Sunday, the forces conducted a major awareness campaign on the banks of the Nile and its tributaries (the Blue and White Niles) in Khartoum State. The campaign aimed to prevent citizens from gathering near the banks, following the tragic incidents in which crocodiles attacked and killed citizens in the Northern and River Nile States. These incidents occurred in recent days as a result of people being near the Nile’s banks.

Major General Qurashi Hussein, Assistant Secretary-General of the General Directorate of Emergencies at the Civil Defense, attributed the appearance of crocodiles in the Nile to the receding of this year’s Nile floodwaters.

He told Sudanhorizon that the campaign resulted in preventing and warning a large number of people from sitting on the Nile Corniche. He pointed out that the purpose of the awareness campaign and the ban on sitting there was to protect families from disasters, noting that the directive for preventative campaigns included all sub-emergency rooms in the states.

In another context, the Assistant Secretary-General of the General Directorate of Emergencies confirmed that the autumn conditions throughout Sudan remain normal so far, and no significant losses or damage have been recorded as a result of the rains, despite their increased rates and the expansion of the areas affected.

Regarding the Nile flood, Major General Qurashi confirmed that the water levels coming from the Blue Nile are still low, and that the Nile’s level is showing a noticeable decrease compared to previous years. At the same time, the Atbara River has recorded lower water levels this year.
