The Terrorist Militia
Dr AbdelAzim Hassan — Lawyer
Calls by Jim Risch, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to designate the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as a foreign terrorist organisation will find no acceptance — neither at the US domestic level nor regionally or internationally. More worrying than the domestic American stance is that Britain and the United States may exercise their vetoes on the Security Council to block any proposal that would classify the militia as a terrorist organisation.
The RSF’s terrorist conduct is nothing new; Sudanese have lived through its tragedies, and they had no option but to flee every city, neighbourhood and village touched by the RSF’s filth as the conflict escalated from a limited coup attempt into a guerrilla war against civilians.
This militia is known to have no political agenda; it carries out a specific functional role it was tasked with, and it will continue to perform that role regardless of the cost. After having succeeded in constricting the Armed Forces to the point of near-collapse, the militia has morally and militarily discredited itself. The Armed Forces, which many expected to have crumbled, were able—thanks to popular support—to turn their retreat into something closer to a miracle.
Article 7 of the Rapid Support Forces Law states that these forces are “a regular supporting force to the Armed Forces and other regular forces.” In any case, their rebellion against the army or their continued conduct constitutes outright mutiny. As we have said, the militia’s local, regional and international backers will not hesitate to support it, whatever crimes or atrocities it commits, until it completes the functional role for which it is financed and directed. The material and moral losses incurred by the militia and its backers will not and do not compel them to desist, even if the price is the destruction of Sudan and the annihilation of its people. Under these circumstances, the militia’s tasks will also include destroying any evidence that incriminates its sponsors.
The Sudanese people’s awareness of their unity is their only path to salvation; unity is the guarantor of their survival because no other solutions exist, however adorned with humanitarian slogans.
