The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region Welcomes Sudan’s Peace Initiative

The The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Secretariat has welcomed the peace initiative presented by the Sudanese transitional government to the United Nations Security Council on December 22, 2025.

In a press release issued Wednesday, the Secretariat stated that the initiative provides a comprehensive and forward-looking framework aimed at ending the nearly three-year-long war in the country, which has caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

The Secretariat expressed its strong support for the Sudanese initiative in the press release, calling for its acceptance as an approach that ensures an inclusive process based on transitional justice, national reconciliation, and broad political participation.

The ICGLR reaffirmed its commitment to the Sudanese-led dialogue during the transitional period, emphasizing the importance of establishing a national consensus on governance and unity within a unified constitutional framework.

It stated that the Conference stands ready to support the Sudanese government in achieving peace and stability and organizing free and fair elections to fulfill the Sudanese people’s aspirations for democracy and stability. The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region reaffirmed its firm commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Sudan, as well as to promoting peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
