The Holy See Calls for Lifting Siege on El Fasher

Vatican – Sudanhorizon
The Vatican newspaper (Vatican News) reported that Pope Leo XIV issued an appeal to the international community to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected in Sudan and asked for prayers for those affected by the devastating mudslides in Darfur.
The newspaper noted that the Holy See spoke during his sermon to Christian worshippers on Wednesday, saying that tragic news is coming from Sudan, especially from Darfur. In El Fasher, many civilians are trapped in the city, victims of famine and violence.
It said that the Pontiff has urged for a humanitarian response for the hundreds of thousands of people affected there. The newspaper noted that Papal appeal included prayers for the victims of the natural disaster, as a devastating mudslide caused by flooding this week killed more than 1,000 people in the Marra Mountains in eastern Sudan.
Speaking in Italian, according to the newspaper, and referring to the deaths and mass displacement caused by the 29-month civil war in Sudan, the Pope made a heartfelt appeal to those responsible and the international community to guarantee humanitarian corridors and implement a coordinated response to stop this humanitarian catastrophe.
The Pope deplored the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people trapped by war, famine, and a cholera epidemic, calling for diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. He stressed that time has come to begin a serious, sincere, and inclusive dialogue between the parties to end the conflict and restore hope, dignity, and peace to the people of Sudan.
